Why are text messages from mothers so much funnier than text messages from anyone else?
I used to think that older Moms in sitcoms who said random things were just a stock character with no more real-world correspondence than english butlers in same. Then my mother got an iPhone. And used it to text me as I was at the 2016 Republican convention:

"Wear a hat."
No context. No explanation. Just: "Wear a hat."
(Further investigation eventually revealed that she was worried Trump supporters would recognize and mob me, and thought that a hat might provide adequate disguise. I did not disabuse her erroneous estimation of my fame, or the amount of camouflage to be obtained from a hat.)

Adventures in Mom texting, Thanksgiving edition.

Even before Mom got a cold, she'd passed most of Thanksgiving to me. My sister has stuffing and rolls; Mom made the turkey stock; I'm making everything else. Totally my responsibility. Like I'm a grownup or something.

In theory.
So I was going to bring my mother soup today, because she's got a cold, and I have a bunch in my freezer. (Long story). Called her to confirm and she inquired about the state of the turkey. When she learned that I had not yet started dry brining ... welp.
I am 46 years, and my mother forbid me--FORBID ME--to leave the house until I had dry brined my bird. Not even to bring her nourishing, restorative soup.

Having been an ex-pat, and worked with many ex-pats, the truth is that most people from rich-world countries find many things to love about living abroad, and also, secretly think their home country is best and chafe at the annoyances of living elsewhere.
There are, to be sure, exceptions to this--and for obvious reasons, people who actively prefer living abroad are disproportionately represented among ex-pats at any given time, even though most lifetime expats are very happy to go home.
But there is no perfect place that everyone prefers; we tend to prefer whatever we grew up with. Also, Americans who think Europe is unambiguously superior to Europe because they so enjoyed their time there as a student, or vacationing in picturesque tourist spots, are silly.

I love that southern and midwestern cities are not afraid to rock the fruit/pecan/goatcheese/raspberry-vinaigrette salad that went out on the coasts after the 1990s. Because that salad is delicious, and the kale that has replaced it is not.
On the other hand--and I say this with love--these cities really need to up their quinoa game, or stop serving it. It's not supposed to taste like you emptied the office shredder into a bowl and dumped some random vegetables on top.
After eating some quinoa in Atlanta, I think I understand why people in the heartland imagine that those of us on the coasts are just pretending to like it for some undoubtedly-nefarious purpose.

Sometimes I hear stories that make me wonder ... what people think graduate school is about. Even in the best scenario where money is not a consideration and power disparities are being reasonably managed ... at some point you still have to both learn and do actual work.
The hardest phase transition for PhD students, I think, is that you are supposed to be working toward competent intellectual independence. That means that your advisor doesn’t solve the problem: you do. You write your grant and fellowship proposals.
And in the case of the actual science: it’s not a problem set. There are often not step by step instructions for how to solve the problem. You are finding the instructions and implementing them and sometimes your first through fourth tries fail and it’s no one’s fault.

...friends who love me & because I keep it pretty professional on Twitter & don't divulge much about my family/faith life, I don't blame them for asking. FWIW, I NEVER mind talking about those things with friends (or even with strangers in more personal contexts). But what... 2/5
...bothers me about those emails/texts is that I'm fairly certain those friends' churches are jam packed with people who voted for Trump in 2016; vocally support him today; & actually kinda like him, his personality, and his way of doing things. And I'm truly disturbed that...3/5

back on my bullshit. just enough time to mainline this episode of cantwell's garbage podcast before tonight's charlottesville city planning commission meeting. i think taking some time away from this shit just lowered my tolerance for it.
i've heard reports that cantwell himself will say, privately, that this show is mostly performance art. alex jones has said the same thing about his show. i'm not sure i buy it. maybe it started out that way. and he's certainly leaning into it. but you can't fake this much hate.
chris says the folks involved with the trad workers are good people, doing good work. he's offered heimbach the use of his platform to publish TWP content. well, would you look at that -- someone's assembling the altright voltron of my dreams.
