Update on the Pegasus-Modi Govt. snooping case:

I'd filed an RTI last month after Minister @rsprasad claimed that his govt. was unaware of any Pegasus attack back in May 2019 during the Lok Sabha Elections.

Today I received a response - and they're hiding stuff.

Thread👇
In my RTI, there's 3 pieces of info I'd asked namely:

1. Whether Whatsapp notified the Modi Govt. about the Pegasus attack in May

2. Copy of the communication received from Whatsapp

3. What subsequent action was taken on it

(1/7)
In their response, the govt. claims that Whatsapp informed them about Pegasus in May but ALSO claimed that it'd been fixed.

This is weird bcoz the govt. also claims that Whatsapp told them in Sep. that 20 people had been compromised & the full extent of attack is unknown

What's most bizarre is their response to Question number 2.

I'd asked for a copy of the communication received by the Modi govt. from Whatsapp.

They refused to give me a copy citing Sec. 8 1(a) of the RTI Act.

Section 8 1(a) allows refusal of info on following grounds:

"information, disclosure of which would prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security, strategic, scientific or economic interests of the State, relation with foreign State"

(4/7)
How, on earth, does revealing the letter from Whatsapp to the Modi govt. affect the sovereignty, integrity, and security of India? How does it affect our relations with a foreign state?

Evidently, the letter had something which the Modi govt. doesn't want us to know.

(5/7)
The govt. first claimed that no communication was received from Whatsapp in May.

Then it claimed it was received but was "full of technical jargon".

And now the govt. claims Whatsapp told them in May that the vulnerability "had been fixed".

What exactly is the truth?

(6/7)
And most importantly - what exactly does the communication from Whatsapp contain that the Modi govt. is trying so desperately to hide by refusing to release a copy of it?

I'll be appealing this.

@rsprasad is evidently hiding something on the Pegasus Snoopgate issue.
