Brushing up on Alberta legislative history, like cool people do, and HOLY, WTF?!

Did you know the Government of Alberta FORCED ~ 4,739 “undesirable” women into sterilization?

Alberta has a history of using farming as an excuse to attack women.

The United Farmers of Alberta enacted a law in 1928 called the Sexual Sterilization Act. You know, because it’s really important to the farming community to control women’s bodies.

They believed criminality was passed genetically, not unlike the NAZIs.

Now, Albertans were NOT keen on this idea. In fact, quite a few Albertans fought it.

However, due to increasing tensions over Eastern Canada’s “liberal” immigration policies, and adoption of conservative American ideals, they dismissed science in favor of irrationality.
Since the act only allowed sterilization by approval of guardian, it wasn’t a big deal. People can opt out, right? 🙄

Besides, they needed it to address “mentally deficient” immigrant criminals, and women suffragists. It was necessary! Oh yeah, and immigrant farmers. 🙄
Immigration to Alberta completely dropped off in the 1930s, and everyone knew it. But they had a hankering for sterilizin’.

By 1937, they “only” sterilized 400 people, and didn’t get the “results” they wanted. So they passed an amendment to allow sterilization w/o consent.
This is where sh*t went sideways.

The "minor" encroachment of rights became a big one. Most people didn't want the law, but it didn't seem like a big issue. The law quickly became a tool of oppression.

It was never to provide a service. It was to execute an agenda.
From there on, the Alberta Eugenics Board approved virtually every sterilization requested by doctors.

Most of these people didn't actually have “mental deficiencies."

They were First Nations, and women turned over by dipsh*t dudes that didn’t want to deal with them.
As bad as that is, it gets worse.

Due to the elimination of consent, they wouldn't even tell women it was happening.

They ran "feeder" hospitals, where people were diagnosed with other issues. Then they would just perform a sterilization.
This happened until 1972. Meaning there's people still alive that had to under go this, many probably unaware they were sterilized.

Oh yeah, did I say this HAPPENED UNTIL THE 70s‽

This didn't happen because people in Alberta are bad people, that had the same ideals as NAZIs.
It happened because they bought into the rhetoric of terrible politicians.

Social conservatives claimed it was about farming rights, and to fight the east's "liberal immigration" policies.

It wasn't. It's about wielding unchecked power to take away your rights.
