Thank you everyone for the efforts. I appreciate. I'm safe, sound & currently at home. All through last night, the only thing I was scared of was meeting those trigger happy policemen or collecting unnecessary beating, or being framed for armed robbery or anything terrible.
I'm a little shaken after spending a night in a terrible cell and the conditions there in, but in all, I'm happy it was a better case scenario that played out.
The whole episode just show the unfortunate situation we find ourselves in this country, even as I wonder about the fate of the over 40 people who were raided last night and are still there at the cell.
Left the office around 7:30pm yesterday, and we decided to hangout at the Lounge adjacent our office to celebrate my younger brother's birthday and watch the EPL matches.
By 10:20pm, we decided to leave after the matches and were heading back to the office where our cars were parked when members of the @followlasg Task Force in two Black Maria pulled up and were instantly ordering us to enter the black Maria.
Knowing full well that we didn't do anything wrong, we demanded to know what was happening, our offence and why they were arresting us. We further showed them our work ID cards but this seem to infuriate them and they started beating us, while forcefully pushing us into the truck
Getting inside the black Maria, we noticed some people have also been adducted and they were all lamenting. They drove us around GRA, Ikeja, picking up more people on the road. At this point, I had to send messages to my friends including @YemieFash, @segalink, @DemolaRewaju
After an hour driving around, they took us to Area F Police station, where they asked us to write our names Two people demanded to know their offense once again and this was replied with slaps.
Before writing my name, I checked to be sure we were not been framed for something terrible like armed robbery or kidnapping but what was on the headline was lighter. They said we were miscreants
After writing our names, we were once again forced into the black Maria. Some people struggled with them at this point. The policemen tried to control the situation by spraying tear gas/pepper spray. Not sure which, but when we got to the task force office, 2 people have fainted
At the Task Force office, they collected our data information from names, state of origin, residential address, phone number etc and then immediately sent us to the cell after collecting our phones. They didn't tell us what we did wrong or why they were putting us in the cell.
As you would expect, the conditions of the cell was terrible, packed all is us like sardine inside one of the cell rooms and left us to our fate. Smell of urine was everywhere and we were supposed to sleep on the empty floor.
I stood, bent down and sat on the floor all through the night, as I was not sure what to expect next. We have heard stories of people in the cell being killed in the middle of the night.
Thankfully, nothing terrible happened over the night. And around 8am, a senior task force officer came in, asked for me and told the other policemen on duties to immediately release me and those with me. How that senior officer heard about me, I can't tell
But I'm sure it's from all the plenty calls, messages and #FreeOkeStalyf tweets that must have gotten someone to act immediately this morning. But then, what about the other people that were adducted last night as well. What would be their fate? We definitely need to #EndImpunity
My cousin @iamsoulhonta who was with me was injured on the head, hopefully it's nothing serious.
However, as I type this, I'm just wondering what to do next. Should I just ignore this whole episode and move on with life or speak with lawyers and hold someone responsible? And if we have to hold someone responsible, who should we petition?
