I like this write up re recent White Empiricism drama. Lindsay's initial critique was incorrect and ill informed, and that matters. But while I did point that out I also was careful not to really endorse the arguments of the paper - and this gets at why.

If choice were presented plainly wouldn't agree to give one's enemies power to direct your opinions. Yet always instinctively opposing one's culture war opponent's conclusions grants them just that power over your mind. However its tempting to do this, so must be guarded against.
My most Kantian opinion is that true freedom is found in being able to apply and abide by one's own standards, rationally discerned and endorsed.

Ok about to kick off the Rethinking Formal Methods in Philosophy #RFMP2019 conference, gonna livetweet it in this thread today. First talk by Joshua Knobe, discussing what Formal Methods are Most Used in Philosophy? - empirical evidence about what we're actually doing!
Why care what formal methods we should actually use? Knobe says he is thinking in particular about what we should teach students, maybe especially graduate students given that they will go on to shape the field #RFMP2019
He used to think this was just a bureaucratic question about how we organise our departments - but he now thinks it is important that we think what sort of knowledge will be best for our students as they go on in life, and how we answer this changes what knowledge they will have.

Oof. I know it's hard to judge based on trailers, especially when they're being purposefully cute about playing coy, but the new Ghostbusters trailer is kind of giving me Michael Bay Transformers movie vibes?
My fear is that the ill-informed backlash to Answer The Call ("They made a gross-out comedy with SNL comedians instead of actors!") might have shaped this into a movie that ignores the comedy and thus the heart of the franchise.

I’m going in alphabetical order. First up is “A Prestigious Affair.” This one is about an exclusive party set in the modern day. Characters are party goers trying to meet the enigmatic Host. Theme: Fame.
The incursion starts by quoting the Irene Cara song, “Fame,” so that’s a good start, haha. My initial impressions of this one are that, while the per se horror elements are minimal, it is still scary as fuck.

So I wasn't alive then, so I don't know exactly how hyperbolic this opening paragraph is, but I am aware that there was hype and like almost all hype, OO did not live up to the hype.
But abstractions and design patterns (see how much more reasonable they are without the scare quotes?) are fine things if you know what you're doing, which is the case with all tools. They solve plenty of real-world problems.

Wait, this introduction... it present the book's theme directly, outlines a central paradigm for the setting, talks about how to use this for a chronicle, and lays out a basic roadmap for the book. And it's all clear and well written?
