When I was still early in training we admitted a woman with severe OCD. She lived on a ranch with her husband and two young adult sons. Her obsessions and compulsions had over taken not just her life but those of her family.
This patient and her family remained with me because it was my first foray into the severity of co-dependent enabling behavior. Her husband and sons had been living in the barn for two years to accommodate her contamination phobias. Living in the barn!!!
I was stunned by the rationalizations and the behaviors her husband and sons had developed in order to appease her pathology. That single case taught me the lengths people will go with denial, avoidance, silence, justifying, and with shame, accountability, and boundary avoidance.
The media has been normalizing & enabling Trump’s pathology since the start of his campaign.
Now it’s normalizing, “both-sidings,” 50/50ing the pathological and unethical behavior of his Republican enablers.
