The biggest lie in health care politics is that it's just the insurers who are keeping prices high throughout the system.

Insurers would be happy to see these prices come down. Providers would fight it like hell.
You can still want to abolish private insurance to get rid of administrative costs, etc. But the biggest savings in single payer come from setting prices, and it's providers who are going to be the main opposition.

Here's the scenario I fear is coming, and why I'm unconvinced by all the Mission Accomplished banners being unfurled: Iran acts with relative restraint now, because the lesson they take from this is they need a nuclear weapon to be safe, and they need to buy time to build it.
So what's happening now isn't that they've decided to react calmly to the killing of Soleimani, but that they've decided to act strategically, in a way that's much more dangerous to us, and the Middle East, long-term.
I'm not saying I'm right about this. I honestly don't know. But even the most cursory glance at Middle East history suggests that it's foolish to think you know how the response to Soleimani's death this will play out a few days after the strike.

Something this @paulg essay gets right: the downsides of being a parent are obvious and comprehensible before you're a parent. The upsides are much harder to feel, because they don't make much sense outside the specific relationship and love you have for your kid.
I also feel a bit too seen by this sentence: "The fact is, most of the freedom I had before kids, I never used. I paid for it in loneliness, but I never used it."

If we are going to get out of the messes we are in, I believe we have to start with a more accurate image of ourselves and the world of which we are a part. A thread about #system boundaries, abortion bans, climate change, gun safety, and more.
We each are flows, more like flames or whirlpools than rocks or billiard balls, in constant exchange with the 'environment. Your 'boundaries' are so much more fluid than everyday perception (in this western industrial growth society at least) suggests.
I mean this literally - not metaphorically. What was 'not you' moments before you drank a glass of water now is 'you.'

If popular satisfaction is the aim of a health-care system NHS did great.
Brits were the most satisfied with their health care of all the populations surveyed.
But, on many vital measures of ***actual achievement*** rather than ***subjective assessment*** the NHS came out worst
