At the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center in Louisiana, inspectors made a troubling discovery: "None of the personnel interviewed were well versed in the National Detention Standards nor did they have a good understanding of the concept of civil detention."
Two detention centers received passing inspections despite using a prohibited chemical restraint called Freeze+P, which its manufacturer brags causes "severe pain." Another passed even after inspectors found staff was wrongfully strip searching all incoming detainees.

This is Carlos Torres. His family brought him from Mexico to Texas when he was a baby. He volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army in 1972 and four years later was honorably discharged. But he never finished his citizenship process and in 1994 was arrested on marijuana charges.
He was deported to Mexico and since 2010 has been living in Reynosa, a border city plagued by drug violence. He scraped by as a security guard for a maquiladora, earning less than $1 an hour and lived in a small concrete house in one of Reynosa's poorest neighborhoods.
I got a chance to meet Carlos in 2016. He was incredibly gracious with me and photographer @gonzorudy. He was funny and witty and thoughtful. He remained a patriot. His sparse bedroom was covered with memories from Fort Bragg and the Army. specials.mystatesman.com/deported-veter…

Sexual assault is a crime and so is making a false allegation. Somehow, we always tend to presume innocence for men accused of sexual assault, but we never presume the innocence of women accused of making up a rape story. The due process argument is a sham.
What would due process really look like for all involved? A trauma-informed, sensitive investigation. We didn't get that with #Kavanaugh. We don't get it in most criminal cases of sexual assault.
But presuming that men accused of sexual assault are innocent? It isn't due process and it can't be. It threatens the due process rights of the women making sexual assault allegations.

Sexual assault allegations in prisons and jails nearly tripled as facilities implemented prison rape standards, according to a new report.
Just 1,473 out of 24,661 sexual victimization allegations were sustained in 2015.
Like jail death data, stats on sexual victimization allegations in correctional facilities are significantly delayed. We still don’t have a final count of how many people died in jail in 2015. huffingtonpost.com/entry/3-years-…
