A team of USA TODAY Network reporters interviewed 35 current and former detainees across the country, as part of an investigation into ICE’s growing detention network. usatoday.com/in-depth/news/…
In addition to the interviews, the USA TODAY Network reviewed hundreds of inspection reports, lawsuits, financial records, contracts and toured ICE facilities from Colorado to Texas to Florida.
The investigation reveals more than 400 allegations of sexual assault or abuse, inadequate medical care, regular hunger strikes, more than 800 instances of physical force against detainees and at least 29 fatalities, including seven suicides, since Trump took office in 2017.
The reporters who interviewed the current and former detainees retell their stories.
Lauren Villagran reports on the Texas/New Mexico borderland for @elpasotimes. She interviewed 11 detainees at the Otero County Processing Center in Otero, New Mexico. The center is run by Management & Training Corp.
Daniel Gonzalez is an immigration reporter for @azcentral. He interviewed one detainee who was previously held at La Palma Correctional Center in Eloy, Arizona, which is run by CoreCivic.
Alan Gomez is an immigration reporter for USA TODAY. He intervewed two detainees from the Baker County Jail, run by the county, outside Jacksonville, Florida, and one who spent a lot of time in different ICE detention centers.
Maria Clark, immigration reporter for @americansouth, part of the USA TODAY Network, interviewed seven current and former detainees held in three different facilities in Louisiana.
Investigative reporter for The Clarion-Ledger @AlissaZhu interviewed two detainees at the Adams County Correctional Center in Natchez, Mississippi, which is run by CoreCivic.
USA TODAY national reporter @TrevorHughes interviewed detainees at the GEO Group-run Adelanto ICE Processing Center in Aurora, Colorado, and the Cibola County Correctional Center run by CoreCivic in Milan, New Mexico.
Multimedia reporter @RafaelCarranza, who covers the U.S.-Mexico border for @azcentral, interviewed two detainees who were previously held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Washington, which is run by the GEO Group.
Monsy Alvarado is an immigration reporter for @NorthJersey, part of the USA TODAY Network. She interviewed four former detainees, two who were held at the York County Prison in Pennsylvania and two who were held at the Hudson County Jail.
