For the past year, much of the nation’s attention to immigration issues has focused on the Trump administration and the southern border. But away from that spotlight there is a separate detention system overseen by ICE that has continued to grow with far less scrutiny.
18 reporters from the USA TODAY Network interviewed 35 current and former detainees as part of an investigation into detention centers used by ICE to detain migrants in the United States.
The investigation revealed more than 400 allegations of sexual assault or abuse, more than 800 instances of physical abuse, more than 20,000 grievances filed by detainees and at least 29 fatalities, including seven suicides, since 2017. usatoday.com/in-depth/news/…
The USA TODAY Network also analyzed inspection reports from nearly 100 detention centers in the country and found more than 15,000 violations of detention standards since 2015. Yet more than 90% of those facilities received passing grades by government inspectors.
