Those arguing for the protection of the rights and dignities of transgender men and women are often told we are "not listening to women". That is a powerful accusation - but does the data support it?
The British Social Attitudes Survey 34 looked at public attitudes to the use by transgender women of women's toilets. 72% of women were very or quite comfortable and only 13% very or quite uncomfortable.
And BSA 37 says that, generally, women, younger people, the better educated and the non-religious are also more likely to have positive attitudes.
Absolutely right. The toxicity of the discussion drives out all but the highly motivated, whose views tend to be radical. And when debate is driven to the extremes it becomes much more difficult for us collectively to reach and deliver sensible consensus.
