When going for protest
Make sure to disable any form of biometric unlocking of phone like through finger or face or fitness band.
Keep Pattern lock, passcode or pin lock
Do Not reveal under any condition.
They may take your phone and delete the captured photo/ video evidence

Keep numbers of Lawyers saved. You may have already recd them on WhatsApp. Keep number of a friend who isnt at Protest saved, preferably last dialled. Remember a few numbers that you can dial from others phone in emergency.

If you have to do voice recording but don't have a voice recorder app in phone or find it difficult to search then simply open a WhatsApp chat and record audio there. It will not just get recorded but also sent to someone who can help or share.

Consider using Google Location Sharing service, to share your location with friends / family. Activate it before you go to a protest and inform them.

Consider carrying a smaller dumb phone with you if you can, they have great battery life. The police assumes that every person has just one phone and the smaller dumb phone may escape their attention. Keep imp numbers saved in it.
When posting photos on social media from protest, check in and use the location. This gives authenticity and also helps in locating you in case of lost contact.
Don't forget to mention, date, time and place with photos and video.

It can be very helpful to share your location on WhtsApp with a friend or a group, for 8 hours. This way ppl will know your (your phone's) live location if data is on.
