To "impeach" means to accuse, to indict, or to charge. The House voted two articles of impeachment, which are equal to indictments. The first image below is the definition, the second is the etymology. /1
2. To those making the argument that Trump isn't officially impeached until the Articles are delivered to the Senate and a trial scheduled, I ask: if that's the logic you want to use, then all the folks in Rikers who haven't had a trial scheduled yet should be set free, right?
3. In the four federal impeachments I'm most familiar with-Judge John Pickering and Justice Samuel Chase in 1804, Andrew Johnson, and Bill Clinton, this "it's not official until the Articles are delivered" argument was never made. Rather, impeachment happened w the House vote.
4. That was the way all parties involved understood and discussed the process. This desperate new argument is gaslighting, an attempt to tell us that what happened didn't "really" happen. It's an attempt to pressure the House into letting the Senate go ahead w/o fair rules.
5. Any purportedly serious scholar who argues (like Noah Feldman does) that impeachment isn't an event but a "process" which only becomes official when the Senate receives Articles from the House, should be ashamed. It's thinly-veiled, cynical sophistry, too cute by half.
6. If I'm formally charged with a crime-"impeached," if you will-and I tell the police I can't be arrested because the trial hasn't been scheduled, what do you think would happen?
7. Playing tricks with the Constitution, stretching its provisions to the limits of credibility, is how we got here, and how Trumpism continues to thrive. Anyone who makes this "not impeached yet" argument is exacerbating that damage, and merely carrying water for Trump. Period.
8. "What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening." --Donald Trump, 2018
9. "The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command...if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed—if all records told the same tale—then the lie passed into history and became truth."
--George Orwell, _1984_
10. Trump has been impeached. Anyone arguing otherwise is asking you to ignore what words mean, what the Constitution says, and what has actually happened in US history. You should think about why you've been asked to do all that so often over the last 3 years.
