2/13 Bear in mind it's gonna take a lot of resources to prepare the NPR in the first place. NPR is one layer and NRC is the layer on top of NPR. CAA is the filter that excludes "foreign" Muslims whilst giving refuge to "foreign" non-Muslims.

3/13 This also has an economic angle: If you're rich, disenfranchising you isn't possible without consequences, so they'll just send ED/IT/CBI to harass you or increase GST compliance requirements. This mainly targets middle class/poor Indians.

4/13 The most obvious angle is religion. Will come to it shortly.
If you're not rich, you'll be called in by the Tahsildar (revenue officer under state governments) who'll say your files have errors/are missing.
Guess what happens? You run from pillar to post just to fix that.

5/13 All the Tahsildar needs to do is to declare you a "doubtful citizen". Once that happens, the real trouble starts. If you're in luck, you get off the hook after some running around, but if the Tahsildar is a dick, you can appeal next only to the foreigners' tribunal.
6/13 The next layer after NPR is NRC. The foreigners' tribunal will decide whether or not to consider your appeal.

7/13 If you're in luck, you won't need to appeal to the court. But if the tribunal decides you aren't a citizen, you need to run around again in order to set your record straight. In addition, you must also pay for legal and court expenses which will be really draining.

10/13 What happens if you're offered asylum? You're literally a foreigner who became an Indian citizen.
If you're from any community that comes under Other Backward Classes (OBCs) or Scheduled Castes (SCs)/Scheduled Tribes (STs), you wouldn't get the benefits of reservation.

11/13 Even if you had those documents before, they're invalidated since you became a refugee before becoming a citizen. Again, this is India, where simple processes take years if not decades. Your life will come to a complete halt as you wait for your citizenship and rights.
12/13 Now forget voting rights and public activism. Where will you end up without a citizenship? You guessed it - in a detention center aka govt gulag.

13/13 If you dissent, the State won't take the extrajudicial measure of paying goons to kill you, it'll make you run around and waste your time, money and energy instead.
