Supreme Court will pronounce its judgement today on the question of balance between right to protest and other public rights like right to movement.

This larger question was posed before the Court in the backdrop of the Anti CAA protests at Delhi's #ShaheenBagh.

Breaking: In the possible first blow to the country’s statistical system due to #CAA_NRCProtests, the government may defer a key socio-economic survey as surveyors are facing the wrath of people who see it as an exercise for determining their citizenship.
business-standard.com/article/econom…
The decision to recommend the postponement of the NSO’s 78th round of survey on domestic tourism expenditure and multiple indicators, which began last month, was taken at a meeting of an expert committee on Wednesday. The government will take a final call now.
The survey, scheduled to be conducted during January-December 2020, is aimed at mapping the multiple indicators of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 2030 for the first time and is collecting information on migration patterns of citizens, purchase of houses, etc

Exclusive: The National Statistical Commission, an autonomous body overseeing official statistics in India, caves under pressure from the government and decides not to release the NSO's consumer spending report of 2017-18.

business-standard.com/article/econom…
The Centre had decided to junk the official survey of FY18, conducted by the NSO, after @bsindia reported in Nov. that consumer spending fell 3.7% between FY12 and FY18 (indicating rising level of poverty in the country).

business-standard.com/article/econom…
However, in December, NSC Chairman (who holds the position of a Minister of State) told @bsindia in an interview that he is not in favour of scrapping the consumer spending report and will ensure that it is released in 2 months.

(The Centre hadn't consulted the NSC till then.)

Quick thread on #Jamia since there's so much floating around.

I spent around 6 hours there today, starting from the afternoon, with my colleagues @adnanabidi and @dansiddiqui.

We didn't see/experience:

1. Any lathicharge
2. Any chemical substances

#CAA_NRCProtests
A large group of protesters spent several hours pushing at police, many in riot gear, at a barricade.

In the tussle, many protesters fainted, and were quickly moved out of the site by ambulances.

Some may have been injured in scuffles.

#Jamia #JamiaProtest #JamiaMilliaIslamia
The police, far better equipped with seemingly new riot gear, was more restrained that I've seen in the past, including at #Jamia itself.

I didn't see them spray any substance, or use water cannons.

I spent many hours just meters away from the barricades myself.

Ends.

We've been out and about ahead of the #DelhiAssemblyElections - the first electoral test for Modi and BJP since the #CAA_NRCProtests erupted nearly two months ago.

The BJP's polarising campaign has helped it, but AAP is still ahead, as per polling data.

in.reuters.com/article/india-…
In neighbourhood meetings, election rallies and road shows snaking through narrow streets, BJP workers and leaders have focused on Shaheen Bagh.

"The main issue is the Shaheen Bagh problem,” said party member @indushekharbjp who arrived here a fortnight ago from eastern India.
There's also the Pakistan bogey.

At a rally in Mayapuri, BJP Mahila Morcha leader Sukhpreet Kaur kept it direct.

“Pakistan will be pleased if you vote for Kejriwal,” she said.

Other BJP leaders have called Kejriwal a “terrorist”, and accused protesters of being rapists.

What does the Facebook page of "Rambhakt Gopal" who just shot #CAA_NRCProtests protesters tell us?

A #thread that shows:

-- how the "Goli Maaron Saalon Ko" call by a BJP minister and candidate works in inciting violence

-- what he and his supporters want Image
How do we know this is the same "Rambhakt Gopal"? He did a Facebook live before he went to shoot the protesters. His facebook page is full of images from Jamia.

He also said this #thread Image
He is also keen to end the #ShaheenBaghProtests.

The fact that he went to Jamia is a deliberate decision. Will explain that in subsequent tweets. Image

Media pundits always say that digital is future. But when I see the conduct and writings of many journos from digital media in India, I feel scared. The latest video of a woman from @thewire_in shows her merely masquerading as a journo. She is a political activist with agenda
Maybe she is hired exactly for this. Or maybe there are little checks/references when people come on board in digital. Both scenarios are scary. Bias in writing is open. Objectivity of reportage not needed. And this is future of media envisaged by the founders of @thewire_in
Sharjeel Imam use to write for digital media portals. Isn't this enough indication of the rot inside the newsrooms (if they exist) in the digital media? Did anyone cross-checked? Did anyone found out his links? Who tried to mainstream his views?

For those of you not alerted to what’s happening in India, every day the news gets progressively worse. The only heartening moments are to see how strongly so many Indians are standing together in protest, across any divide, to uphold the values of its secular constitution.
There are so many images of the protests and solidarity as Indians of every persuasion stand together to uphold the idea of India, and the ideals of India. This one, in front of the Jama Masjid in Delhi, singing the national anthem. #CAA_NRC_NPR

Many lawyers are protesting in various ways at the vandalism on display towards India’s constitution.

For more than a month the #CAA_NRCProtests have not only sustained, the continue to grow. From Assam and the North East, they have now spread across the country. And we have seen the government, not only obfuscate, but also lie +
First the government claimed CAA-NPR-NRC is one chronology.
Then they said there is no chronology.

Earlier they said religious persecution. Now they say persecuted minorities.

Said this will help minorities, but have Dec 31,2014 as cut off +
As protests started to grow, in BJP rules states witnesses violence and brutal state repression.

In Jamia the police attacked by entering the campus and the library.
In JNU, the VC asked the police to stand outside the gates until an armed mob had finished the assault +

[Thread] 1. Ok, have read the views of various people who disagree w/ my pair of tweets yesterday urging that protestors should not give a communal coloration to the #CAA_NRCProtests. Many argue that the fight IS about Islam, that Muslims are fighting for their identity in India
2. I also understand the primordial place of the Kalima in the Islamic faith. "La ilaha ilallah" is unexceptionable in itself. It's the context that matters here; the phrase ‘tera mera rishta la ilaha illallah’ tends to isolate the community from others whose rishta is to India.
3. How are nonMuslims to understand that in a protest about CAA-NRC, “tera mera rishta” refers to the individual’s relationship w/God?God shouldn’t come into this. BJP are gleefully circulating such videos onWA, telling Hindus “see what this fight’s about; which side are you on?"

This is the way to handle protests @DelhiPolice @AmitShah 👏 Allow people to express their view, keep a distance but ensure no one steps out of line
Of course, onus on both sides, but police need to be extra sensitive Image
And this is a good example of how the govt should not behave @AmitShah @narendramodi
Totalitarian governments behave this way
#CAA_NRCProtests Image
Home minister @AmitShah's teaching the tukde tukde gang a lesson is clever because he says "in the elections".

But it sounds like he's sending another message across, so perhaps he needs to be more circumspect @narendramodi

A fantastic explanation of why so many Sikhs are protesting India’s Citizenship Amendment Act that unjustly targets Muslims.

Please watch and share. ✊🏾❤️✌🏾 #CAA_NRCProtests
A few points for those who don't understand Hindi.

- If Hindu nationalists are successful in removing Muslims today, it won't take any time before the same happens to others, including Sikhs.
- Modi's Hindu Nationalist Party (The BJP) openly states its intention to make India 'a Hindu nation.' This is wrong.

[Modi's strain of ethnic and religious nationalism is fanatical, exclusionary, and ultimately, violent]
