I think one reason Trumpsters are so obnoxious is that they foolishly believe The Leader is more popular than he is because they live in a bubble. If they knew that many of their friends and relatives hate his guts--and hate his party too--they might question their commitment....
Which may be more passive than it appears. Lots of people go along with the crowd simply because they don't wish to be unpopular or out of step. They need to know that they are not on the winning side, but are only deluded that they are.
