I loved Boot's book, Corrosion of Conservatism, particularly the heartfelt mea culpa (pages 169 in my version).

I think, though, @MaxBoot sees reactionist politics as a form of conservatism.

Reactionary politics is fundamentally different form conservative politics . . .

Reactionaries call themselves conservatives because it doesn't sound dangerous, and they can disguise what they are.

After the Democrats embraced civil rights, the Republicans Party won national elections by inviting the reactionaries into their party.

Conservative thought they could wink at the reactionaries. . .

But reactionaries did what reactionaries do: They took over the GOP.
