Okay, Celaena is kinda awesome so far.

And nice to meet Chaol and Dorian early as I've heard those names countless times in the Facebook groups and Instagram.

If I remember correctly, this is somewhat of a Cinderella retelling and I can sort of see it.

Not much is really happening yet hence why my thoughts have been somewhat bare.

Both Chaol and Dorian both really like her though. This is gonna be fun

Okay, there is way too much going on for me to worry about Kaltain's plotting. Like I do not care that she wants Dorian so badly and is trying to take Celaena out.

Celaena is in a very precarious situation with the trials. WHERE PEOPLE ARE BEING MURDERED.

Thankfully, this chapter ended with Chaol and Dorian bonding time.

They are very cute BFFs.

Celaena is torn between two very dumb boys and is mad at herself. Love!

It's so funny that Dorian is so smitten with her AND is trying to wingman Chaol.

SJM is good at writing action scenes but I kind of don't care much about the Test.

Though things are not looking good for Nox at the moment.

Both Chaol and Dorian are idiots and I love them so much.

Well, that was a lot of backstory.

But not much has been happening either. Celaena is trying to figure out Elena's message. Chaol and Dorian are trying to fight their ~feelings~. Nehemia is still the best.

Like ever her name sucks. Every other name in SJM's books flow or are cool sounding.

Hers sounds like a calorie bar? Like no duh, we're supposed to hate her but make it less obvious!

Mwahaha Chaol has gotten so good at reading her. Impressive.

I am worried about this monster but don't know what the real purpose is.

Love that Dorian just breaks into her room to chat. You are so in loooooove.

It's funny that Dorian is looking for love and Celaena is like pish posh. Marry for alliances and have a real love on the side.

AND THEN trying to convince Dorian to read it by pretending Chaol refused.

I love her so much.

Celaena and Feyre are similar, but she tends to be more open. And I think that's why I relate more to Feyre.

This could also be that the narration is different (third-person vs. first) so we don't get as much into Celaena's head that we did Feyre.

Anyway...

"She felt Dorian watching her - and not in the cautious way that Chaol sometimes watched her. Rather, Dorian just seemed to be watching her because he enjoyed watching her. And she enjoyed watching him, too."

Why do all of SJM's characters have terrible dads?

Dorian and Tamlin feel such guilt over their shitty father's actions. Hell, let's throw Lucien in there too.

And then we got some good Celaena/Chaol scenes. Not romantic, just good.

He really does love her and wants to look after her. His realization of how small she gets around the king was sweet.

And that he really wants her to win!

Awww love Celaena and Nox's conversation!!!!

Also love Dorian and Celaena playing chess. And kissing!

Did Kaltain become slightly more interesting by seeing those things around Cain? Maybe!

Oh man, the two of them are so conflicted about their feelings and the whole situation.

I love it!

Somewhat of a set-up chapter.

Not sure if the Duke's plan with Kaltain is going to work.

BUT OMG THE CHAOL/CELAENA MOMENTS!!!!

She made the right decision taking Nehemia's staff, but CHAOL DID THAT

Well, I'm hoping she made the right decision...

The beginning of the chapter was awesome!

Then, the Duke and Kaltain's plan worked and uh...

This is not going well for Celaena and I am not okay.

CHAOL IS NOT OKAY EITHER.

And Dorian!

And who exactly is Cain? What is his deal? Why does he know everything

Thank God Elena finally showed up since she was a reason Celaena got into some of this mess.

But really, who is Cain?!?!

Nehemia being a BAMF and trying to protect Celaena too.

And then there's Dorian, utterly helpless along with Chaol.

Ayyyy that is not what I expected. But she did it!

Was it cheating? Kinda! But she was also almost cheated out of it too.

Don't make me feel sorry for Kaltain. What is this nonsense?

I really hate the king. Dorian needs to dethrone him ASAP

It's fascinating that he is essentially as broken as Feyre was at the end of ACOTAR.

Like they succeeded but at what cost?

Maybe that's why I love him so much?!? Hmmm.

Elena is hiding too much and I need to know everything.

Once again, the king is a dick and I'm sort of shocked he didn't list Dorian as someone he'd have killed should she fail at any mission.
