I get Climate Change is a very important topic in Politics. But there's a natural ocean cycle (top 3 strongest Indian Ocean Dipole event) that played a role in drought in Australia over the past 6 months. By leaving out the natural process, CC is being used as a political crutch.
I strongly believe in Climate Change and I believe we need to work together to figure out a solution. But Mr. Sanders tweet is falling into the alarmist category as the natural underlying process that is likely more important here than CC is being ignored.
Politicians need to be smarter about attributing weather events around the globe to climate change. If we continue to blame EVERYTHING to climate change, there's a chance it ends up as the classic "Boy Who Cried Wolf" story. And I don't want that to be the case.
Here's an example of my point, which was published in Science by Shanahan et al., which explored rainfall variability in the West African Monsoon. researchgate.net/publication/24…

Drought can be a component of natural variability at multidecadal, decadal, and or interannual time scales.
"We find that intervals of severe drought lasting for periods ranging from decades to centuries are characteristic of the monsoon and are linked to natural variations in Atlantic temperatures."
"The severe drought of recent decades is not anomalous in the context of the past three millennia, indicating that the monsoon is capable of longer and more severe future droughts."
I do believe that climate change can alter the frequency or intensity of these ocean cycles but this is an open science question that has not been proven yet.
We need to look at how the current severe drought in Australia matches up to historical drought well beyond the observational period (i.e., satellites) in order to claim climate change is the sole culprit of why Australia is seeing this drought.
I'm not a climate denier so please don't think that my purpose here is to discredit climate change. My purpose is to challenge those who are claiming CC is the reason for all or any extreme weather on the planet to better communicate why something is happening.
Climate Change is a very important topic in the history of our planet. But the reason why things are so polarized in the "climate change" debate is because of important science topics being left out in arguments to make one side look better than the other.
And this problem exists for both sides. I'm just pointing out one single example. If you have followed me for awhile now, you know that I stay out of the climate change discussion because it's exhausting to see something polarized.
