reflecting on my last year, the first year ive spent doing graphic design and illustration stuff at full blast, i now have an interesting problem that has been manifesting itself in a unique way slowly. [...]
this is not about anyone in particular so, if youve recently asked me to do something, just saying, im not thinking of anyone specific with this. basically my problem is to what extent i will take jobs that are misaligned when checked against my macro moral theological purpose.
this has obvious manifestations. if some legal weed outlet asked me to do work for their stuff, id have to say no due to my own feelings about weed. its more grey when it comes to alcohol but due to my own history ive also turned stuff like this down.
any artist has cultivated a small skill set + then, when hired, is using that power to elevate the vibe of whatever is hiring them. so if a brewery hmu i would have to say no, not because id like them to fail, but because i wouldnt want to use my “power” to make drinking cooler
so theres obvious ones, but then it gets more complex when it comes to informational stuff. like, if someone had a book called “heres why u should do acid all the time”, i wouldnt want to do that book cover. but its rarely that obvious. do i “screen” every client? seems unlikely
then it gets more complicated when ideology is mixed in. i wouldnt want to do work promoting certain religions. but, im not mormon at all, but when someone mormon asked me about doing some stuff, i was totally cool saying yes. do i just map and chart every “line” i have?
theres no real answer but its just something i think about. ultimately i think of my little [pixel shop] as a storefront open to everyone that turns away projects rarely rather than thinking of taking on projects as an endorsement of the content in and of itself. 🤔
