Do you use LED lightbulbs? Although they're more expensive, they can save you a tonne of money because of their low running cost and durability.

For example we converted 10 50W halogen spots in the kitchen/dining area to LEDs.

Before LEDs: 500W total

After LEDs: 50W total
Before LEDs: 9p/hour to run.

After LEDs: 0.9p/hour to run.

Over the 3 months of winter, figuring on 8 hours use per day, that's £64.80 in electricity for the old ones. But only £6.48 in electricity for the new ones.
For a whole year, assuming an average of 5 hours use a day, that's £164.25 in electricity for the old halogens vs £16.425 in electricity for the LEDs. In other words, they pay for themselves in less than a year on running costs alone!

But of course it's greener too.
