An article should be as short as possible, but no shorter.

Can we capture this with text summarization? Ideally, summarization takes an article & reduces it to its essence.

Iterated summarization may then yield the shortest version of an article. Like fixed points in analysis.

The internet increases variance. But why?

- The internet disintermediates
- Disintermediation removes middlemen
- No middlemen, no moderation
- No moderation, no limits
Centralizing institutions masked the variance. Now it's all spilling out. When anyone can interact with anyone else, we get both extreme good and extreme bad.
Some of the most valuable companies in the world are essentially opt-in filters on the internet that give you the upside while bounding the downside (malware, trolls, spam).

Google ranks pages, Apple curates the app store, Airbnb rates their hosts.

Internet zoning

Residential: social networks
Commercial: marketplaces
Industrial: AWS
Social networks have traditionally been purely "residential" and marketplaces purely "commercial".

But just like there's a trend towards mixed zoning in the physical world, we're starting to see a mix of residential and commercial as well in places like Substack and Patreon.
Also, add messaging/dating/personal homepages to residential, e-commerce/consumer SaaS to commercial, and GitHub/enterprise SaaS to industrial.

@ErinJHolmes Seems like DOIs and the WayBack Machine would be great use cases for @ensdomains, @blockstack, @unstoppableweb, @hns, @ipfsbot, @axiomorg, and the like.

Solving link rot, rather than censorship resistance per se.

Article & thread. @svdate details cost of the President’s golf vacations to the taxpayers. It’s a lot, way more than the annual budgets of some entire federal agencies. But it’s most instructive as an example of a belief central to 21st century American culture.
The belief is that rich people should be able to do whatever they want. Not all Americans believe this, of course. Not even all Republicans do (OK, that one represents a leap of faith on my part). But for most Americans, phrases like “equal justice before the law” mean...
...people like them shouldn’t be treated any better than they are. The rich are not like them, so if they want special treatment that is OK. Trump ripping off the taxpayers & using the Presidency to promote his golf club is OK. Cheating on his taxes is OK.
