With all due respect to Dr. Blanchard @BlanchardPhD , women aren’t your therapy to prescribe.

Our privacy, legal protections, statistics, activism, platform, and resources aren’t forfeit to anyone who finds them soothing.

We have the right to center ourselves in our spaces.
We support solutions to meet the medical and psychological needs of trans people, so long as those solutions don’t mean women are required to surrender sovereignty of our own definitions, dignity, language, communities, and spaces.
I don’t believe it’s ethical to promote psychiatric treatments which license patients to violate the rights of others, and I don’t think you do, either.

Falsified legal markers serve as a license to violate the rights of women. We can’t support that.

I’ve been seeing a lot of “both side are so extreme and intolerant” happening lately re: the gender debate.

Friendly reminder that the “extremism” gender criticals are being called out on is our position that women exist distinctly from men.

Beware false equivalences.
Mr. Gervais called us extreme for criticizing his statement that men who identify as women are women.

That’s not extreme. That’s elementary. The alternative, surrendering the very concept of “woman” to men - that is extreme.
I’m a believer in compromise and in imperfect solutions, if those solutions address bigger problems. But compromising on the definition of “woman” solves nothing. It ignores the damage genderism does to women’s rights. It makes collateral damage of us.

The best model for trans rights, in my opinion, is one of religious freedom. A person’s faith can determine how they dress, the name they take, and the ideas they express. I support everyone’s right to live their convictions when they don’t infringe on the rights of others.
I’m reflecting a lot on how I want to focus my writing and activism in 2020. I am working on a book (working title is “You’re Not Helping” if anyone’s curious), and I’m just about ready to launch a personal website. But gender is a massive, sprawling topic. Focus is necessary.
My GC activism is aimed at a progressive-to-moderate audience. I’ve learned that it’s crucial to express not only what rights you won’t compromise for trans-identifying people, but also how you envision protections for this population. My answer is to treat it like a religion.

It must be said - It’s pretty narcissistic of dudes to respond defensively when I mention the patriarchy. Patriarchy is a POWER SYSTEM, and it’s been around a hell of a lot longer than any of you. Rest assured that I KNOW you didn’t personally construct the damn thing.
“Patriarchy doesn’t exist!” Except women in the US have voted for less than a century. Only recently won the rights to do things like own property and keep their jobs after becoming pregnant.

Doesn’t exist. Try harder.
One of the reasons I say “patriarchy” instead of just “men” is that I recognize individual involvement in it varies a whole lot. All men benefit from it, but how they contribute to it varies quite a bit. I name the system because it’s patriarchy, not men, that I object to.

@naomirwolf "Denying my humanity" is a lie. Refusing to believe that a man can become a woman is not denying anyone's humanity, it's simply refusing to subscribe to someone else's fantasy. This kind of exaggeration and pretended victimization is toxic and ridiculous and should be called out.
@naomirwolf But the very real damage being done to women by gender self-id -- loss of physical privacy, loss of single-sex spaces and resources, intact males being placed in women's facilities, males taking advantage of sports and shortlists meant for women -- is almost never reported on.
@naomirwolf 80% of males who transition to transgender women keep their intact male genitalia. Some also choose to not take hormones. Gender self-ID says that these males are women if they say they are, and must be treated exactly like women and allowed full access to women's spaces.

I've been thinking for some years about defensiveness as an epistemic vice, especially as it relates to normative criticism.
We're all imperfect, which means that there is something wrong with all of us. But nobody likes to be criticized, which means we're all vulnerable to something we don't like.

One phenomenon I'm particularly interested is when criticism of an idea feels like a personal attack.
This happens with all kinds of criticisms, but it's especially pronounced with moral ones. As we all know, describing something a colleague said as racist can be extremely incendiary, triggering a virulent defensive response.

Today while we celebrate the Jayanti of #SwamiVivekananda it is also the Jayanti of another great India, unfortunately not that well known. The Miracle Man of Medicine, Dr. Yellapragada Subbaro, one of the great scientists of the modern era, who made some sterling discoveries.
While most Indians would recognize Swami Vivekananda, the name of Yellapragada Subbarow, would certainly not ring a bell for many. But yet if one were to compile a history of medicine, in the world, his name would be right up there along with likes of Fleming and Ross.
Dr Yellapragada Subbarow made some of the most significant discoveries in the field of medicine, yet forget about ordinary people, even in the scientific community, his name is not too well known. And unfortunately for a long time even among Indians too.
