Just a thought on #Veganuary
I understand, and agree with the idea of cutting down on the amount of meat we consume.
But #Veganuary is, simply put, the dumbest way to do it.
If you want to eat a balanced diet in the UK (a Temperate Climate) then you have to vary your diet season to season.
That means eating the foods that are naturally abundant at certain times of year.
That means that meat products (sheep, beef, pork) that are naturally born in spring time are traditionally at their best in the winter months - where the human body requires fats and proteins from meat to endure colder temperatures.
#MeatWithIntegrity
Similarly, in Summer and Autumn, the British countryside is full of some of the best fruits and vegetables in the world.
So in summer we should make up more of our diets with fruits, vegetables, pulses, greens etc.
Q:
So why the hell is #Veganuary in January, a time when the UK isn't spoilt for choice as far as non-meat options is concerned?
A:
Because people are staggeringly ignorant of where their food comes from.
And because it's a better (but still not very good) pun.
Most #Veganuary recepies I've seen are not using Tatties and Neeps. They use lovely exotic fruit and veg.
So in promoting #Veganuary, you're promoting the importing of vegetables and fruits.
So if you want to eat well and save the planet, use what your country naturally produces at the best time of year for it.
