100 years ago today, Kentucky became the 23rd state to ratify the 19th Amendment, which affirmed women’s right to vote, but many minority groups had to wait much longer.
1924 (Indian Citizenship Act): Native Americans are granted full citizenship, but many are still denied the right to vote.
1952 (McCarran-Walter Act): Asian-Americans get the right to become citizens and vote.
1965 (Voting Rights Act): Congress lifts many of the discriminatory barriers that prevented Black Americans from voting, but even today, we still must fight against barriers that block many from voting.
