Starting my 10th year writing letters of reference for my students, from @ubc to @CIDE_MX

I always send my students this blog post when they ask me to write a letter of reference for them.
It takes me a lot of time to write a good letter of reference (I have SOME text that is a template, but there is a lot that I write as new text), so I only accept when I am not overwhelmed and when I feel I can write a solid letter.
Writing letters of reference is an activity that I need to do in ONE BLOCK OF TIME. For example, I am right now writing two, and I won't change activities until both letters are submitted. I can't multi-task. The entire process needs to be completed for me to be able to cross off

People often ask me “what kind of notes do you write in your Everything Notebook?”

These notes in loose pieces of paper give me an opportunity to answer.

I often draft abstracts by hand and then type them.

I also like to consider and reflect on how my writing is connected.
I had made a resolution to write and publish more stuff on the politics and geographies of waste. To do that, I reflected on what I had researched and how my different strands of work connected with each other.

These are draft notes. I can do one of two things:
1) staple these pages into my Everything Notebook in my 2020 section “Discards and Waste Studies”

2) transcribe my abstracts and notes (instead of stapling)

In this case I find it’s better for me to finish drafting my papers and their linkages and THEN transcribe onto EN.

JCCF "demand letter":

The JCCF letter to the UBC president, sent on Dec 31, 2019, cites from the university's web page on freedom of expression. Not really something you can base a law suit on. Here's a link to the university's statements on freedom of expression:

My approach consists of 4 separate stages: 1) gathering sources, 2) reading/analyzing the sources I have collected, 3) organizing the sources and making a top down writing outline, 4) writing. 2/
Some people do research and write one chapter, and then do the same process for another. Others do research while writing. I don’t adopt these approaches. 3/

I did well in math and science in elementary and high school, so I chose to study clinical microbiology. Although coming from a low-middle income family, I was able to attend university, thanks to my parents’ effort to prioritize education over other commodities. #VoicesIWS

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
