I realize there are some who may not know what today means to me and my family — what it means to our community in Tucson and across Arizona. Nine years ago today, a gunman opened fire at a Congress on Your Corner held by my wife, and then Congresswoman, @GabbyGiffords.
We lost six people to a senseless act of violence. 13 more were injured, including my wife. The aftermath left our community shaken, but Tucson came together and supported each other through it all.
Many of us have pledged to make our communities safer by working together and finding responsible solutions to reduce gun violence. The work we’ve done has brought countless other survivors of gun violence from across Arizona and the country into our lives.
I am grateful every day that Gabby survived the shooting nine years ago, but I’ll never stop thinking about those we lost:

Today we were quoted in an article by @hunterw who reported on an FBI memo out of the Phoenix offices that argues that "anarchists extremists" are a "lethal threat." This memo was sent out to law enforcement around the country. news.yahoo.com/exclusive-docu…

Nine years ago today, I ran out of the Senate – where I was a witness testifying about the TARP Wall St bailout – and raced to the @WhiteHouse. With seconds to spare, I got to see President @BarackObama sign Dodd-Frank, the Wall Street reform bill that gave us the @CFPB.
Exactly 8 years ago, we opened the doors at the @CFPB. Eight years since we built an agency to get the tricks & traps out of the fine print of credit cards, mortgages, & other financial products. And in 8 years, it’s returned billions of dollars to people who have been cheated.
The big banks have fought financial reform – especially the @CFPB – every step of the way. So from my first Senate banking committee hearing in 2013, I’ve pushed our banking regulators to hold Wall St accountable for cheating people & breaking our economy.

I was 16, when I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF.) I had no idea what was happening to me because at the time, it made no sense. However, I remember the pain of that period like noonday. I lived on dialysis until i was 22. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth
It took over my teenage years. I don’t remember having much of a life as a teenager because dialysis was 3x a week & every session was 4hrs. Add the time it takes to recover from being exhausted by the process, my day was pretty much over. #dialysis #OrganDonation #renalhealth

Nine years ago tomorrow, I sent out my first tweet from a little page I had created called @TheSingleWoman. I had zero followers and no idea what I was doing. The tweet was a Katherine Hepburn quote, “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.”
The next nine years would be an adventure in not just breaking the rules but changing them. I got “discovered” on Twitter. I left a full-time job in PR to chase my dream of being a full-time writer. And against all odds, I got a book deal without a literary agent. Then 3 more.
I worked with @Oprah. I spoke at a @BishopJakes conference in front of 20k women. I went on a nationwide speaking tour that culminated at @JoelOsteen’s church. I hit the @nytimes bestseller list - with a book that not even my publisher believed in.

Nine years ago this morning, at a small outpost in Afghanistan at the bottom of three steep mountains, roughly 50 US servicemembers were attacked by up to 400 insurgents.
2/ By the time the smoke had cleared, 8 US troops had been killed — the deadliest day for the US in Afghanistan that year.
