Like ballet, the antennae repositioned silently, elegantly. @almaobs is an amazing achievement to behold.
When you look at these, you remember that governments can cooperate and mobilize the private sector to achieve astonishing greatness through science, especially toward something universal, like our cosmic origins, what unites us in our humanity.
This clustered array can spread to 15 km apart as the massive dishes are moved around the plateaued landscape to generate ultra high resolution images such as this rare occurrence of two galaxies lining up together to form an Einstein Ring. almaobservatory.org/en/press-relea…
ALMA receivers in the dishes are so ultra-sensitive that they detect the energy emissions of their own construction materials. To detect energy emissions from deep into the galaxies they need to operate in a cryostat chamber to chill out the noisy atoms in the hardware itself.
Can’t stop thinking about ALMA and what we’ve built in a desert high in the Andes, optimal conditions for space exploration, a landscape that resembles Mars. We can do anything when we set our minds to it.
