I wish people sharing advice for the academic job market would have a fraction of self awareness to see how they are gate keeping & marginalizing candidates

What about the ways you as faculty are committed to making the process fairer & more transparent? Where are those threads
As someone who’s been on both sides, on a hiring committee & as one who was on the market and got lucky, this process doesn’t have to be this way

How about we stop talking about the market like it is something with secret codes to crack rather as a thing we all contribute to
The market is the way it is partly because we continue to horrible hiring practices that marginalize candidates, that center elitism rather than empathy, and uphold structures of exclusion and inequality

We don’t need to be like this.
So when you want to share your advice for the market how about you also share what you are doing as a faculty member to make this process better and healthier
