googling around for pics it also looks like volcanic lightning has a slightly different "structure"? like the "rules" used to generate them seem slightly different – they look thinner, wire-ier, more... "brownian"? shakier, smaller, more numerous strokes. maybe bc particle mass? 
less "bolt-y" and more "net-ty". ash web-lightning
