I've been trying to figure out how to phrase why some of the tweets about "creatives" relating to this song rub me the wrong way... if there was anything i got out of connect bts, it's that they want art to be accessible. but it feels like there's this weird line being drawn?
idk i'm not saying that you have to be a crazy millionaire artist on the scale of bts to even dare relate to them. that would be stupid and obviously the extent to which you are creating art doesn't strictly determine how much you care about it or something.
like, as far as I know, none of us on stan twt are on bts' level. no one here and, I'd argue, no one anywhere knows what they're going through. the /point/ of the song is to communicate that, to help us understand but also just for them to vent. no one will perfectly relate
because that's not the point, no one else is BTS and it's a VERY bts song. on the other hand, everyone will relate to varying degrees. whether you're a professional writer or a soundcloud rapper or you doodled something in your notes once and really liked it.
the idea of "creatives" existing as this definitive category of people, I guess, is what I can't quite get behind. it's a sliding scale, i think. probably no one in the whole world doesn't have some element of...not creativity, necessarily, but "creative"ness in them--
some aspect of life or time where they've created something and derived pleasure from it. trying to make this about specific people feels weird. like bts doesn't have less interest in relating to you if you're not an artist. and i know that's not what people mean, but.
if we interpret it to be more about passion, an accountant who likes their job might feel the same rush of "creative" joy when they make a good spreadsheet. passion isn't something exclusively felt by people in artistic fields.
but on the other hand, I don't even know that it's about passion. the song doesn't exist in a vacuum, and a /significant/ portion of bts' discography is about passion, dreams. how it's okay not to have one. look at the lyrics to paradise, for one. "even if it's to eat or sleep".
so i really don't think the point of this song is about how artists are special and experience something others can't possible relate to as a result of having passions or dreams. not that people are explicitly saying that, but i think it's an underlying sentiment.
bts, a band, chose a quote about dancers for a reason. i think the message is meant to be more human, not about a specific field or type of person. even if you wouldn't label yourself as "a creative", that doesn't mean you don't experience the fears and sentiments in this song.
obviously, if you ARE an artist, you can find yourself more in lines like "i'm in my studio". there's definitely a literal meaning to this and i'm not trying to say you can't identify with that. bts ARE indeed singers. but i think it's an over-simplification of the song?
there's... way more dimensions to this song and this album than can possibly be addressed in any one sentiment. but we want to be able to flatten things down to easily digestible ideas. "it means bts don't care about music anymore","it's about creatives losing their passion", etc
i think it is first and foremost about bts, their own experiences and fears. and it IS very personal, which is i guess why it makes me feel weird to see it interpreted as something else, some clear-cut message.
i don't think there's any real meaning to being a "creative". if you don't classify yourself as that, bts have been very clear in the past that that is "valid", so to speak. and like i said, this cb clearly has a lot do with the ideas of art and accessibility.
taking this in combination w/ connect bts, i'd interpret this as bts saying that even those who aren't artists in the traditional sense still have something to connect to in art. whether it's an art installation or this song, everyone can & should be encouraged to connect to it.
but please don't take this too seriously or like i'm trying to say that i think it's an incredibly important and offensive issue. there's a lot of other meaning to find in the song and the dance film so let's focus on that, yeah?
