I’m getting a lot of DMs from folks looking for opportunities where they can make a decent living. Here’s a short list of remote friendly companies you can work for that pay pretty well while giving you a lot of flexibility. #Thread

When I moved back to Ghana in 2016 this is where I freelanced most of the time. Nice thing about it is they pay San Francisco rates regardless of where you are in the world. Data Engineers, Designers, Software & DevOps check it out.
2. @toptal: toptal.com/talent/apply

Toptal is super great because of the caliber of clients they do work for and the exposure they give to their freelancers. Interview process is extremely hard though and pay depends on location but still decent. Software, PM, UX, Finance.
3. @Crossover4Work: jobs.crossover.com

By far the network that pays the best salaries ... but be ready for the level of pressure that comes with it. Interview process is extremely hard (think Google & Facebook level)

Opportunities for Software, QA, SRE, Cloud, Data, PM.
4. @turingcom developers.turing.com

Fairly new but heard some good things about it. Only for software developers looking to work for American companies.
5. @AngelList angel.co/jobs

Setup a profile and filter for remote jobs to see what you like. If working for early stage companies that offer equity is appealing to you, this is definitely the place to go. Opportunities for pretty much every role you can think of.
There are many other sites out there but I only recommended the ones that I know people have used to find jobs successfully so I can vouch for them. If you also know other sites like that, feel free to add to the thread. Let’s secure the bag. 🔥🔥🔥
Also, let me say something: do not, and I repeat: do not limit yourself to Ghana. There are so many opportunities out there and you should absolutely take your skills where they will be valued the most. Ghana is a small country and a small market.

2 months ago, I bought a new car. Nothing fancy, 2014 Toyota Camry. I wanted one with all options, including push-to-start. When I told my mechanic this, he advised me against it and said "the push to start thing, when it spoils, they find it very difficult to fix"
I thought he was just being someway. I took his advice because finding a good mechanic in Ghana is not an easy task. But I didn't think much about it. Fastforward to a few weeks later. A friend of mine who drives a Honda Civic tells me his car has been at the shop for a while.

Really hope other techies in Ghana are paying attention. Don't stay in your corner. Never stop learning, always share what you learn.
Sometimes you may feel like you aren't good enough to talk about anything. Don't deceive yourself. Everyone starts from somewhere.
And when you think no one is even paying attention, trust me, there is always someone paying attention to what you do.

For #remote workers, headphones are kind of a huge deal.
When your best social interaction happens on calls, you want it to be smooth. When you have a crappy microphone, you sound 47% less professional.
I made this stat up so I can justify my headphone addiction.
It's important to note that I'm NOT an audiophile. Sound quality on my end is the least important factor.
What I am is fussy when it comes to convenience. I want the headphones to be comfortable!
This thread is to prove to myself that I DON'T NEED TO BUY THE AIRPODS PRO.
These Sennheiser SC-60 are BY FAR the best quality for calls. @automattic issued them to me and they:
- have a great microphone
- are USB (pain in dongle world)
- are cheap ($30)
They are my go-to for quality calls and I even record podcast using e'm.
BUT CABLE 😨!

Here's some of the best advice I got when I became a manager last year! It's simple, but considering most people receive no management training whatsoever these days, it's better than nothing. Thread!
Have a regular 1:1 meeting with your direct reports that is dedicated to their needs and projects. Ideally it would be once a week, at least 30 minutes. Do not cancel that 1:1 meeting, ever ever ever.
As a manager, your job is not just to track the work and success of your reports. You're also responsible for helping them reach their professional goals. They will have jobs after they work for you, and helping them prepare for those goals isn't a threat to you! It builds trust.

Woke up this morning to my 5 yo son asking us about the air. Yesterday his soccer was cancelled and we didn’t let him go to the park due to poor air quality (AQ). If you have small kids you can imagine the energy that's pent up even from 1 day of being stuck inside.
Like I said my son is five and literally every year of his life that he remembers, there have been days or weeks where we’ve had to reorganize our lives to deal with wildfire smoke. He has a whole vocabulary & understanding about fires and AQ I definitely didn't have at that age.
