On this day in 1991, the US bombed an infant formula production plant in Iraq as part of Operation Desert Storm. The US lied, calling it a biological weapons facility, but in actuality, “it was the only source of infant formula food for children one year and younger in Iraq.” 
The incident was clearly a war crime; however, George H. W. Bush, Colin Powell, & US military leaders all pushed the lie that the facility was actually a biological weapons plant. As usual, the mainstream media helped sell the government's lies.
Peter Arnett, a Pulitzer Price winning CNN reporter, visited the facility in Iraq and determined it was just a plant producing infant formula. The White House accused him of spreading Iraqi propaganda.

The US Air Force claimed "multiple sources” indicated the facility produced biological weapons, but there were no sources. A 1993 congressional report, found the US targeted the plant simply because its roof looked similar to weapons production facilities. counterpunch.org/2018/04/23/in-…
In the run up to George W. Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq, Bush repeated the lie that the infant formula facility the US bombed in 1991 was actually a biological weapons facility.
The US has to this day never taken responsibility for this war crime and has never offered an apology. The US bombing of this vital factory is just one example of how US war and sanctions devastated Iraq’s infrastructure & inflicted untold suffering on the Iraqi population.
