Bill Bratton. Professional fearmongerer & architect of mass surveillance, broken windows, & targeted, racist policing in 3 different major cities (NYC, LA, Boston). In last 3 decades, incarceration dropped nearly 75% & major crimes by 82%. We don’t need you or your lies. Go away.
Bill Bratton literally created the irrational, racist, costly, & ineffective crisis of mass incarceration that modest reforms in NYC (no bail for misdemeanors & nonviolent felonies) aims to put a dent in. Now he’s using the same fear tactics he used to create it to perpetuate it.
Bill Bratton praising the new NYPD commissioner for lying & fearmongering to jail more Black & Brown people is like if George Wallace praised Donald Trump for stoking racist resentment as he works to oppress & inflict pain on all marginalized people. “Attaboy!”

Sickening: Bill Barr today. Politicizing antisemitism. Announced he’ll jail a woman w/ mental health issues now in treatment. Despite release in Brooklyn, charge her w/ a federal hate crime. All to inflict pain. Today, the victim called to stop exploiting what happened. He won’t.
Recall that William Barr made the call not to hold Eric Garner's killer accountable federally. Not to intervene. Claimed Eric Garner was not in a chokehold when he repeatedly gasped, "I can’t breathe." But a poor Black woman w/ mental illness, he’s all in: gothamist.com/news/bill-barr…
“The feds could take her as soon as her release from hospital & jail her. She will potentially be stable at that point. The worst thing you could do to somebody who's just been stabilized is to incarcerate them. Creates the exact problem these bail laws were designed to remedy.”

Elyse Maister, the Jewish woman allegedly struck by Tiffany Harris, is brave. Didn’t need to speak up & who knows what her community might think. She did what felt right bc using her is so wrong. “I feel like politicians are exploiting these incidents to roll back bail reform.”
While NY tabloids, police & prosecutors have been busy attacking Tiffany Harris, Maister, the young Jewish woman allegedly attacked by Harris, knew from the beginning she was in need of help: “In the moment she seemed like in some emotionally distressed state, just unwell.”

1. A few words in response to Attorney General Bill Barr’s speech today, lambasting reform prosecutors.
2. I think Barr, other so-called “tough on crime” prosecutors, and the media get some critical things wrong about our prosecutor reform movement and what it stands for.
3. They want to depict us as “soft on crime,” lawless –or, more charitably, in favor of balancing “safety” with “justice.” This is a fundamental misunderstanding of what we stand for.

This @nytimes expose is a must-read. Cronyism and corruption in #NYC fed a bubble in medallion prices. The consequence: The city brought in tremendous sums, politically-connected fleet medallion owners got rich, & low-income drivers got trapped.

Much of the reporting focuses on lending practices and lax oversight by regulators, but let’s not forget the original sin of the taxi industry: the medallion itself. If #NYC didn’t insist on artificially limiting the number of taxis, this scandal would never have happened.
The city justifies medallions as tools to control congestion and save the industry from “ruinous competition.” Even if you are inclined to believe that medallions once provided a benefit, its unquestionable that they now do more harm than good.

This week (April 19) is the tragic 30th anniversary of the brutal rape of Trisha Meili which led to the subsequent framing and conviction of what has come to be known as the #CentralParkFive: Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Korey Wise. 1/
I was a teenager in the Bronx at the time of this case. It is a defining episode in the narrative of race and policing in NYC. I went to school with kids from Schomburg, the complex where several of the falsely accused lived. Their story deserves to be heard. 2/
