You can't call a feature a solution without first:

1) Establishing the definition of the problem

2) Establishing what it means to solve the problem

Without 1, you get type errors (bake a cake with this hammer).

Without 2, you get scale errors (buy a cake with this penny).
Both a hammer and a penny are features. If you asked users - would you like to have this? - some of them might say yes.

But having these things is not sufficient to solve the problem. The user still does not have a cake.
Even when you know what the problem is, and what it means to solve it, you still don't have a solution.

What you might have is a bet. "Based on our research, we *think* that giving the user money will let them buy a cake." We have to place the bet and see if we were right.

One of the dangers of focusing on the craft aspect of design is that you are distracted from challenging the premise.

This is something I'm trying to change in my own practice - using UI design artifacts to inhabit the problem rather than attempt to solve it.
It's a diametrically different approach than design sprints and similar ideas, because the outcome catalyzed by this work is actually regression from the "doing" back to research. Perhaps it's closer to externalizing my mind's eye for my colleagues' benefit.
It's closest to @jmspool's idea of despicable design, except more naive than bad. When faced with an incumbent system that's hard to compare to the new one, it can help to model the old one as similar to the new one. What are the flaws in a 1:1 adaptation? articles.uie.com/despicable-des…

1) As a professional in the IT field, I find the information coupled with the conclusions in the report about this facet of the investigation to be woefully wrong. In this thread I'll go over it.
2) The word "appears" shows up many times in the sections referencing Russian cyber activity. The way it shows up doesn't show much confidence. No evidence or even a basic summary of the evidence for Russian "hacking" is ever provided.

2. Framing and narratives matter. Seeing #data only as an asset (oil, gold, currency, etc) ignores implicit risks. Also seeing it as radioactive (with a half-life), an externality, a ticking time bomb, a liability, etc helps to locate it in a larger ecosystem. 2/n #GoingDigital
3. To a tech hammer, every socioeconomic problem looks like a tech nail. Informational asymmetries and power imbalances require attention to complex structural issues, not just on deployment of one size fits all tech solutions in a box. 3/n #GoingDigital

UCC had opportunity to comment on the #Data.Protection & Privacy Bill. The enactment of this law is long overdue. A comprehensive law on the collection & processing personal information gives effect to the right to Privacy envisaged under Article 27(2) of the Constitution
UCC welcome the protections offered by the Bill in terms of export of data, breach notification requirements, data subjects access rights, automated decision making, compensation and the right to be forgotten and provision for financial and penal sanctions for breach of the law.
Distinction between Data collectors & data controllers.
The Bill should however clarify & distinguish Data Collectors, from Data Processors & Data Controllers. Clause 2 is inconsistent with international good practice which provides for two broad categories of Data Controllers

Um, Obama's campaign used publicly-available data. They didn't trick people into giving up their data when they thought they were interacting with their friends.
It was demographics, voting records, and shoe leather, asking people what issues were important to them in the campaign--not fake "quizzes" on Facebook. I know, because I was one of those collecting that data. People knew who I was, why I was there, and what they were telling me.
Oh and PS, we didn't use sex workers or bribes! Because a) we didn't need to, and b) yeah: it's wrong.
