There’s no sugarcoating any of this. We can’t pretend like it’s gamesmanship or a good faith argument. Trump’s defenders are literally arguing he should have dictatorial powers and stand above the law. That’s not hyperbole. That’s what happened today.

True believers in the status quo have called us reactionaries and conspiracy theorists for seeing this coming, and in believing institutions would hold Trump and that it wouldn’t get this bad, they gifted him room to maneuver.

They’ve expressed authoritarian philosophy, forwarded an all-powerful executive that embodies the law and cannot be reined in or subject to impeachment. They’ve announced intentions to legalize foreign interference and subvert our elections. This is real. This is happening.
They have the votes to acquit him, witnesses or no witnesses. They can move past this just by running out the clock. Going out there and pushing the concept of a dictatorial presidency wasn’t necessary and only served to illuminate what they actually want.

If this stands, if Trump is acquitted for blatantly breaking the law and betraying the Constitution, if foreign interference and brazen corruption becomes the norm, if he wins re-election...this philosophy of an all-powerful, extralegal executive is going to be a nightmare.
