1/Disappointing day on the front lines yesterday. Two sides to every story. This is ours. A Kokum, an #Indigenous Grandmother reached out to me for help. She was asked to sign what she thought was a “support” agreement in regards to her grandchild. #abpoli
2/We met the social worker at Kokum’s place along with friends and family supports. The SW did not have a support agreement but a Custody Agreement, a very important and intrusive document. Kokum wanted to defer signing for a short time and consult a lawyer first. #abpoli
3/The social worker implied that Kokum sign now or an “Apprehension” could take place. Kokum asked if I could at least review the document, the worker refused. #abpoli
4/Again, Children Services wanted this Kokum to sign an intrusive document in regards to her grandchild without a lawyer consult, no 3rd party review, and as SW only had one copy, Kokum wouldn’t even have a copy to keep. #abpoli
5/We asked if SW could at least explain to Kokum what was she signing? The worker excused herself, consulted a supervisor(Kokum cant consult but SW can). The worker returned and stated she could explain document if Kokum was alone w/o supports. #abpoli
6/We were recording this, I asked SW if Child Welfare lived in a #Charter free bubble as I believed Kokum’s #humanrights were being violated. SW demanded we stop recording her. #abpoli
7/I said to SW, you are the #Crown, in a private residence with tremendous authority and power, no we're going to record this. The SW then stormed out of Kokum’s residence, paper in hand, unsigned. #abpoli
8/I sent an email to Manager and Deputy Minister of @rebeccakschulz right there/then. A few hours later a supervisor called, stated of course Kokum could review document with a lawyer and they would stop by later. Problem solved? #abpoli
9/Nope, they came by alright, police and SW that night and apprehended this #Indigenous child. #abpoli
10/I’m with Kokum, today & a lawyer. We're fighting to give this Kokum support, dignity & access to justice . She’s devastated, filled with anxiety, worried about her grandchild. She has a right to speak with a lawyer - and an example of what we do @coalition4jhr #Humanrights
@coalition4jhr 11/The worker seemed very new and was friendly until the end.
@coalition4jhr 11/Just to clarify. I used the word "Social Worker" in this thread in a generic form. I don't know if this particular person is a RSW. She didn't leave a card. Her government contact info calls her a Caseworker. Sorry for any confusion.
@coalition4jhr 12/UPDATE> As of now, almost 48 hours, Kookum states no visit has been set up with Child Welfare. Kookum states the child did get to speak to his mother briefly yesterday. #abpoli #HumanRIghts #Charter
13/ Update: First visit with Mom-tomorrow afternoon
