Tradition & culture are constructed, & reaffirmed partially through the imposition of barriers to spaces that may allow for the discussion and negotiation of ideas seen as contrary to that norm. Who successfully defines those barriers is less about values, and more about power
Because to deny those spaces is to accept that such beliefs can be challenged by discussion and negotiation. Thus the need to close down spaces rests on the assumption that culture is constructed and prone to change. Closing down spaces is thus a way of affirming commitment
to the status quo, but also an acknowledgement of change. So somewhat paradoxically, arguing for the existence of fixed values & traditions is somewhat in contrast with the fear ppl have around the ease with which such values can be discursively challenged
