Humans are perpetually dissatisfied. As we obtain more of what we want, we grow thirstier, more attached, and hardly content.

This is something I'm observing in my own life.
Financial freedom is a curious thing. It's made me harder to please; I don't seem to appreciate the little things to the degree that I perhaps used to.
When I was younger I figured if I could just earn X, I would be happy, I would finally arrive. But when I finally earned X, ... I simply replaced it with Y.

It’s a never-ending chase.
What do you want out of life? What do you wish to achieve?

You might say that you want financial freedom, a job you love, a caring spouse, a nice house...

But in asking that, what I’m really asking you to do is to get out of your head and observe yourself objectively.
If you do that, you might realize that what you really desire is a feeling. You want to ‘feel’ a certain way in the future.

But in truth, you can begin to feel this way right now.

Everything you’ve ever wanted is available to you right now.
Happiness and contentment can be cultivated and experienced at all times.

This is one of the most impactful things I learned during my short time as a Buddhist monk.
This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t strive to achieve certain things in life.

But, if you can live your life with greater awareness, you’ll rise above mindless urges that aren’t that important (and fulfilling) in the grand scheme of things.
And you’ll focus more on those things that are [important and fullfilling].

By doing that, you’ll alter your life in a significant way.
These are my challenges this year:

• To relearn to be content with what I already have

• To cut back on the noise

• To focus on the essential

•To relinquish the mindless cravings that don’t add anything worthwhile to my life

•To come back to a state of greater wisdom.
