It was not a political calculation. Nor was it based upon law or evidence, as the case didn't approach the level of removal.
No, it was his opinion. If that was tainted at all by animus towards Trump, only he and G-d know.
I'm sure Romney felt betrayed by Trump, too. FWIW, I can appreciate his integrity, however misguided by emotions.
Yet, expulsion from the GOP is not the cure.
That was his responsibility in this trial, not voting his opinion.
While anecdotal, none of the many Utah-based followers messaging me seem to agree with his vote.
The citizens of Utah may pass HB217 to create a mechanism to recall him before then.
Or he might finish out his term as a pariah in the Senate.
Maybe his vote does represent Utah (@SenMikeLee would disagree) and he'll get reelected.
But this was not the action of a coward. Romney knew he'd pay a price.
Character in politics is rare. Effective governing demands compromise. The trick is setting boundaries and keeping them. Few can maintain them for long. It's a slippery slope.
I think I know which will last longer.
Still, 19 votes shy. Trump has been righteously acquitted and is well positioned for reelection.
Tomorrow is a new day.
We might even get final results from Iowa. 🤷♂️
