@cass_m @drbahine That issue of attributing internal responsibility on male-specific gender issues is massive. It also comes up in our gendered reactions & responses to victims of violence (especially sexual violence) homelessness, mental health care etc etc.
The assumption is that since we live in a patriarchal society, individual men must be architects of their own fortunes & women must be victims of external factors. It's commonplace, it feels intuitively correct and is almost entirely not just bullshit but sexist bullshit.
If your gender politics basically boil down to 'Men do while women are done to' then your gender politics suck.

Just seen a LibDem call Corbyn an antisemite, which prompts me to share a story. In 2005 the LD candidate standing against Gerald Kaufman for Mcr Gorton was a guy called Qassim Afzal. >
Gorton has a high Muslim population & Afzal's campaign included going round mosques telling people it was their duty to vote for a Muslim against "the Jew". Gerald went ballistic & reported this to LD HQ. Their response? They ignored it & stood Afzal against him again in 2010. >
In 2010 there were no electoral hustings in Manchester Gorton because Gerald Kaufman point blank refused to even sit in the same room as Afzal. That election Kaufman increased his majority from 6,000 to 7,000. >

He expects to be stopped in what he is doing now. What he wants is to be seen as the PM who tried everything in his power to deliver a hard Brexit to the UK but was foiled by Corbyn & other opposition across the Commons. He then calls a general election which he hopes to lose >
If he is unfortunate enough to win, no one blames him for the catastrophes of Brexit because he's only doing what the people demanded. If he loses, Labour has to deal with all the crap of a second referendum, Brexit being cancelled, all the backlash to that. >

Owen is right on this of course (minor couple of quibbles aside) but important to understand this is only half the story. Men opening up about distress & seeking help is important, but only helpful when we (as individuals, society & institutions) are prepared to listen & hear.
"Men must speak out & be prepared to seek help" is an atomised, individualist remedy which is actually quite convenient to the (dare I say it? Neoliberal) establishment, as it places onus on the man suffering & ignores, eg, chronic shortages of therapy on NHS @OwenJones
@owenjones The obsession with persuading men to open up about their feelings as a solution to the suicide crisis also ignores the massive role played by economic & social factors in suicide rates. Tens of thousands of men died (globally) as a direct consequence of the 2008 financial crash.

Correct. Peer review entered only recently & devitalized science. There is now a *massive* campaign by people who use it to their advantage to rewrite scientific history as if it has always been there as part of the scientific method.

This is modern propaganda. A cult. Madness.
Why do we all accept and repeat this nonsense? Its wildly funny! It’s like someone from Men in Black took one of those neurolyzers to all of the STEM community and turned them into amnesiacs. Yet anyone can look up a history of peer review anywhere:

The scientific *narrative* is starting to catch up to widely accepted intuitions...finally. The naive idealist in me always hoped it would be the other way around, but sadly we live in a culture besieged by ideologues.

There's not much in here I haven't read before, but this (image below) is a truly hard hitting paragraph. It's almost as if intellectualising everything leads us towards stupidity.

It reminds me of an adage: "that idea is so stupid only intellectuals believe it".
On a similar note, I read a study recently the showed the general public are as competent as academics in predicting whether a study will replicate (I'll dig it out...).

We really are living through an age of intellectual stupidity.

While I’ve been critical of how IQ tests are applied in education, @nntaleb is incorrect that IQ tests are “meant to select exam-takers, paper shufflers, obedient ITIs (intellectual yet idiots), ill adapted for ‘real life’”. See thread below.
1. If you look at which tests are most strongly correlated with total IQ scores, you see that IQ is least strongly correlated with clerical skills (e.g., code learning, reading speed) and most strongly correlated with analogical, abstract reasoning ("fluid intelligence").
