GOOD MORNING, my project this week has been fixing stuff uploaded wrong to the archive and making it work. No fault of the uploaders. How about a thread where I point them out to you?
So, a quick technical overview. The Internet Archive has always been dedicated to uploads and making them easier to access, more flexible, and so on, without messing with the original files. So you get video files converted to a second streaming version, and books made browsable.
We know what "viewer" based on mediatype. We also have a much more complicated uploader these days that tries to "help" you and tell you what mediatype your thing is. This works thousands of times a day. It does not work, occasionally.
People will scan an old magazine, end up with a pile of .jpg or .png files, and then upload those dozens or hundreds of scans into an item. Our system punts and assumes this is a slide show. Obviously it's not a slideshow, it's a text. You also lose the ability to OCR/search.
I can do a fix, and am, which is where you zip up the jpeg files, name them .cbz, and the system will leave the uploaded scans where they are but the default view is "read like a book".
Now WIRELESS WORLD is readable in the book browser. 1957 radio magazine. archive.org/details/wirele…
And this COMPTIQ is beautiful. archive.org/details/compti… Note the suppport for right-left pages.
I've done about 200 magazines and items today because of this method. had to write a super stupid set of scripts, so I'll use those going forward.
