You know when you go into a nice store and everything inside matches? That is how a good town planning office should function. Shoes matches the coats which matches the gloves which matches the shoe laces which matches the ties. And the clerk suggests your best fit. #GoodUrbanism
In the same way an architect or builder should walk into a town planner's office, explain their goals, and then be given a set of choices that, no matter how they are combined in the end, will create a harmonious and ordered effect on, both on the building, the street, the town.
You want a roof? Here's the preferred tile shape, here are some conservative variations, and here are some playful alternatives, all of which will work well. Or why not a copper or zinc roof? These are choices. Brick? Yes, here is the color palette. Street tree? These work best.
We all accept this thinking instinctively. Parents don't let their children eat whatever they want. We take advice from the sommelier about what wine goes with what food. When we go into a restaurant we expect a certain harmony in the meal even if the menu has several courses.
And we learn as humans to behave. When we go into a restaurant we adapt to the atmosphere there. We don't start political arguments or do our laundry or berate our bookmakers over the phone or play with lego or practice our yodeling skills. Harmony, balance, and a natural order.
We used to have pattern books, like Abraham Swan's 1775 "The British Architect". It was a huge hit with both builders and customers. A favorite hobby of architectural historians is to match builders with what pattern books (or style books) they got their ideas from.
If you can drum up 1200 fans of Corbusier let them have space to build a town or neighborhood in a city built to their taste. Parts of Tokyo, Tel Aviv, LA, works after all. It might be fun/scary. But remember that it isn't fair to ruin an entire neighborhood to satisfy one ego.
