This is the humble Takagi Townhouse, in Nara prefecture, Japan. Built entirely out of wood, without a single nail, in the late 1840s. It does not look like much. But it is spectacularly well built. Here is a list of the major earthquakes to have hit it since it was built... —>

The Richter scale is logarithmic so the difference between a M8.0 and and M9.0 is far far larger than the difference between a M5.0 and and M6.0. For example.
Of course there was a typo in the list of quakes; the last one should be 1995 not 1955. Here is an older thread I did on this kind of foundation/seismic insulation.
