There's an argument that Dems should pivot from poor-mouthing the economy to arguing that "it's doing well, so we're flush enough to invest more in health care/education/green jobs/etc."
Notwithstanding the logic of Keynesianism, there's some polling data suggesting ppl fear big public investments during economic crises (too risky, money out of my pocket,
etc.), and become more supportive once good times have returned.
This is part of the argument that Obama's presidency would have been more successful had he waited/been more modest on health care until the unemployment rate was lower. It's corollary is that now is a decent time to promise bigger liberal things.
"Trump wants to use our prosperity to line the pockets of his friends. I want to use our prosperity to give you a public option/better schools/family leave/new infrastructure/etc."
That argument won't work as well if Trump is promising to go full populist in his second term, but I'm more skeptical than Pethokoukis that he can shake Mulvaneyism:
