Reposting this tweet from over a year ago as I write what I will say about the damage that is done by allowing reactionary groups to invite speakers like Murphy into university and library spaces.
As I'm thinking through conditions under which unis can and should deny the booking of a speaker whose work contravenes a uni's mandate, I'm reminded of this thread I wrote about the Laurier freedom of expression statement that followed the Shepherd story.
It's a good thread. You should read it.

I particularly draw your attention to this strange way in which the statement concern trolls itself: that because future, imaginary uni members might interpret a policy in a different way, we should stop ourselves now from having one.

Yes, the steam valve theory of discourse. In the heyday of Enlightenment NOW, James Watt already pioneered how to measure its pressure. Nowadays, we use digital steam measure apps to accurately predict when white supremacist shit is about to explode.

If you're in steam valve theory, you will know that our measurements have near perfect capability of identifying direct incitement of violence. Somehow, tho, hate speech continues to escape all our measurements. Some psychics say they can measure it, but who believes them.
Besides, if we were to close the steam valve that drips racist shit with nicely apportioned frequency, you know what would happen? I tell you. Authoritarians might also hit upon the idea that a steam valve could be closed! Who wants that?! Better not close this shit valve, right?

Cannabis is regulated (in part) for the sake of public health.

While it’s true that certain practices pose a threat to consumer safety, the ongoing criminalization of non-violent behaviour is concerning. IMHO it’s a waste of resources amid the deadly #OpioidCrisis.
“Illicit” cannabis = *same plant* as legal cannabis. The distinction is that it’s sold, produced, or distributed without legal authorization.

The Cannabis Act (+ related rules) establishes a framework that excludes some legacy market participants who self-regulated for years.
Legalization was supposed to “reduce the burden on the criminal justice system in relation to cannabis.”

Ironically, the federal government allocated hundreds of millions $$$ to train and equip police to investigate and prosecute cannabis crimes.

As per the report MO of foreign PE firms like KKR is to borrow money from Indian Banks at 8-9% and then lend it to Indian businesses at a whopping 20-25% - the high rates of interest makes it difficult for native business to survive or remain profitable to repay the lenders.
KKR is the second largest foreign PE investor in #CCD with 6.07% (1.28 crore shares) after selling approx 4.25% in Feb 2018, making at the time 10.3%. Foreign investors together hold 22.35% stake in #CafeCoffeeDay valued at Rs 724 crore.

I think the starting point for commentary like this is to say that no death of any Nigerian at the hands of bandits & criminals is acceptable or justifiable. Even a single death is one too many. And one of the primary responsibilities of any Govt is security. That’s not in doubt.
