As a lifelong dog owner, mostly of pedigree dogs, I have a lot of views on breeding of this nature, and indeed in general. This deliberate exaggeration of physical features that hinder a dog’s ability to lead a normal, happy, healthy life is nothing short of barbarism.
Lawmakers and enforcement had no problem dictating to me that my rescue dog that I shared my life with in the USA was not permitted into the UK because of the DDA & her being a ‘pit bull’... which isn’t even a breed, more a description of physical traits, & possible parentage.
She was mostly American bully, but had some AmStaff in her too, and the abusers that landed her in a shelter in the first place cut her ears almost completely off, so she looked ‘tough’. Nobody had any issue denying her access to a life with me based on her looks...
But it’s ok for breeders to not only completely flout the law in pursuit of ‘extreme’ looks in legal breeds (bullies being flavour of the decade at the mo), but profit off it enormously as well? At the end of the day, those paying the ultimate price are the dogs.
I own bulldogs. I know bulldogs and other bully breeds. I know working dogs, and utility dogs, toy dogs and everything in between. I have been around dogs my whole life & I know the issues that are caused not only by bad breeding, but by the fashion & trends that bring it about.
This is greed & vanity & nobody that breeds for these sorts of traits should call themselves an animal lover. How can you live with labored breathing & having to clean dead skin etc out of deep skin folds daily to prevent infection, all of your own design, & claim to love dogs?!
The kicker is... this dog will have an absolutely astronomical price tag on it too. EBs aren’t the only bullies that are being bred into abject deformity. Checkout exotic American & lowrider bullies as well. It’s heartbreaking what humans will do to living creatures for profit.
We don’t deserve dogs. And dogs TRULY don’t deserve what we do to them.
