.@BernieSanders has a simple SC message: racist voter suppression hurts low income whites & blacks by enabling electeds to oppose a living wage & healthcare. Stop the powers that be from using racism to sow division. Let’s build a coalition, black & white, for economic justice.
44% of people in South Carolina are poor or low income, including 36% of white people —many who live in the corridor of shame with failing public schools and poor wages. The income of the top 1% has increased in the state by 116% while the income of the 99% has declined by 5%.
The 1% in the South would not have the power they have without racist voter suppression & gerrymandering. They use race to get majorities and then they use those majorities to support policies that hurt poor, low wealth black, white, and Latino people.
Over 1 million workers in South Carolina —52 percent of the workforce — make under $15 an hour. 674,000 plus people are on SNAP in the state. The tools of systemic racism divide & disempower working class Americans to allow this injustice.
Our campaign is about building a multiracial, multicultural coalition to work towards Dr. King’s dream of giving poor & low wealth Americans the chance this country gave me —a basic education, healthcare and a fair household wage so they too can have a shot at the American dream.
