2/ We asked participants 14 questions about physicians' communication and interpersonal skills using the Communication Assessment Tool:
3/ Ratings of physician communication skills were lower on average than reported in emergency departments, surgical care settings and family medicine residency programs.
4/ The highest rated item was #2: "treated me with respect". Lowest were #10: "encouraged me to ask questions" and #11: "involved me in decisions as much as I wanted".
5/ Participants who gave lower ratings of drug effect also
gave lower ratings of physician communication skills. This was true regardless of the treatment received — #patientpreference matters!
