GS Sardesai, in his Vol.1 of the New History of Marathas mentions the role of the Mahanubhav cult and its founder Chakradhar in destabilizing the Orthodoxy in the Yadava Kingdom, which eventually resulted in the deaths of both Chakradhar and Hemadri.
The death of Hemadri resulted in the disorder in the empire due to breakdown of civil services which made it easier for Alauddin Khilji to capture Devagiri. He was also helped by the Mahanubhav agents

@blog_supplement One of the feature of Mahanubhav cult was their vehement opposition towards Sanskrit. They rigidly enforced the use of Marathi, even for religious purposes. This was an "in-group" marker that differentiated them from the existing Orthodox sects of the time.
Like the lemurs of today, the sect didn't look upon Vedas as sacred, they were purogami as they didn't believe in caste barriers, and they were staunchly monotheist, that they didn't even tolerate Avataras.

I admire Godse. He saw that the Duratma was taking the country for a ride with his saintly halo and fasting-unto-death threats, & took him out. After taking Duratma out, he handed himself over, and in the courts, he justified his actions in clear terms.
His defense spooked Cha-Cha so much that it wasn't made public. He fully accepted the consequences of his actions and didn't beg for mercy. There's something admirable there.

However Godse & Gandhi were Heroes under two different Moral universes.
As Herr Nietzsche wisely pointed out, mankind ever since civilization has been under the influence of two different moral systems - The Master Morality and the Slave Morality.

One of the striking aspects of modernity is the reduction of the available categories. Eg: In the Hindu epistemology, Pratyakśa, Anumāna, Śabda were considered to be valid means of knowledge (Pramana). Modernity operates only within Pratyakśa, Anumāna, foregoing Śabda 1/
In Haidt, Joseph and Graham's Moral Foundations Theory, there are six moral foundations (Care, Fairness, Liberty, Loyalty,Authority,Sanctity) as the set of moral foundations defining the morality of a society. Modernity operates only within the Care, Fairness & Liberty. 2/
This reduction has interesting consequences. It ends up declaring Truths and Experiences which have long held to be acceptable in traditional societies as invalid as these cannot be sufficiently explained using the restricted set of categories. 3/

Off late there is a whole genre of fiction that's based on portraying the aitihAsika and paurANika material within a "realistic framework". Authors use various tropes to explain away the fantastical/magical/divine episodes from itihAsas and purANAs 1/
This is perhaps not a very new genre. Stalwarts such as K M Munshi, S L Bhyrappa, Narendra Kohli, who have dabbled with this genre. K M Munshi's Krishnavatara series tells the story of a brave cowherd who realizes his potential and decides to fight the ... 2/
... the tyrant Kamsa. Along the way, he does kill various "asuras" but using a combination of strength, skill, and a sharp wit. None of the magical elements that we see in Srimad Bhagavatam.

The 2020 election is likely to be close. Trump's approval rating & GDP growth suggest that he'll win about 49% of the two-party vote, per our modeling. He's clearly competitive, especially when Democrats need to win the popular vote by about ~2.5pts to win the electoral college.
So the "electability" of the candidates is a particular concern for Democrats.

So what do we know about who is more likely to win general elections?

There were some scholars during the British Raj who realised the importance of history in nation-building. They were furious at the state of affairs. Rajwade, Vasudevshastri Khare and others started work around 1900 CE.
The formidable task of collecting and compiling evidence was so immense that Rajwade could not foresee the starting of writing of the History of the Marathas, in his life time.

#History/#Art thread – From my recent trip to Madurai/Tirunelveli. On Jain sites (some with a rich history dating back to at least the 3rd cent. BCE), early Pandyan rock-cut cave temples (7th-8th cent. CE) & the amazing Vettuvan koil.

Before I start on the places, the history around all this is fascinating & splits opinion. Is it apt to call the script Tamili/Tamil Brahmi? Did it develop independently in the Tamil country/come with the Jain monks from the north? Were 8,000 Jains actually impaled in Madurai?>
